Bottom Bracket
The bottom bracket is a heavy-gauge steel fitting bolted to the bottom corner of each side of a garage door. It holds the looped end of the lifting cable and transfers the spring's counterbalancing force directly into the door's bottom section.
The bottom bracket is a stamped or welded steel fitting fastened to the lower corner of each side of a garage door's bottom section. It serves two critical functions: it is the anchor point where the lifting cable loop or swaged cable end terminates, and it provides the structural connection between the lifting cable and the door itself.
When the torsion spring unwinds during opening, the cable drum winds the lifting cable and the tension is transmitted through the bottom bracket directly into the door's steel frame. Because the full counterbalancing load passes through this fitting on every cycle, bottom brackets are manufactured from heavy-gauge steel and secured with carriage bolts through the door section's end stile.
Safety note: Never attempt to remove or modify a bottom bracket while the door's springs are under tension. The cable under load can release suddenly if the bracket fasteners are removed. A professional technician releases spring tension before servicing any component in the cable and counterbalance circuit, including the bottom bracket.
Signs of a failing bottom bracket include visible cracks or bending in the fitting, stripped or pulled bolts, or cable slipping off the cable slot. If the bracket fails under load, the door can drop suddenly on one side, bending panels and potentially causing injury. Replacement should always be done in pairs—left and right—using brackets rated for the door's weight.

Lifting Cable
A lifting cable is the steel wire connecting the garage door's base to its cable drum; as the spring unwinds, the drum winds the cable and raises the door.
View termTorsion Spring
A torsion spring mounts above the garage door on a shaft and counterbalances door weight by twisting. Learn key specs and what components it connects to.
View termExtension Spring
Extension springs mount above horizontal tracks on each side of a door and stretch open to store lift energy, counterbalancing door weight on lighter doors.
View termCable Drum
A cable drum is the grooved spool at each end of a torsion shaft that winds the lifting cable as the spring unwinds, pulling the garage door upward.

Common questions related to bottom bracket.
Why is the garage door bottom bracket so dangerous?
The bottom bracket at each lower corner anchors the lift cable, so it sits under the full pull of the torsion springs.

A garage door's main parts are the panels (sections), hinges, rollers, and tracks that guide it; the springs, cables, and drums that counterbalance its weight; the bottom bracket and bearing plates that anchor the system; and the opener and photo-eye sensors that move it and keep it safe.
