Learn Button
The learn button is a small button on a garage door opener's motor housing that puts the opener into pairing mode. When pressed, the opener listens for the next rolling-code signal it receives from a remote or keypad and stores that transmitter's identity, granting it access to operate the door.
The learn button is a recessed push-button on the back or side panel of a garage door opener motor unit. It is the mechanism by which the opener accepts new transmitters—handheld remotes, wireless keypads, and vehicle-integrated systems like HomeLink—into its memory.
To pair a new remote, the user presses the learn button until the opener's indicator light turns on (indicating it is listening), then presses the button on the remote within 30 seconds. The opener records the transmitter's identity and, if the system uses rolling code, synchronizes the rolling-code counter. The indicator light flashes or turns off to confirm the pairing succeeded.
The learn button also serves as a security reset. Holding it down for several seconds erases all stored transmitters from the opener's memory, which is useful when remotes are lost or when a home is sold and the new owner wants to ensure no old remotes have access. After clearing, all remotes must be re-paired individually.
The learn button's color is sometimes used to identify the opener's frequency and protocol: Chamberlain/LiftMaster openers use different button colors for different generations (purple, red, yellow, orange, green), and each color indicates which remote models are compatible. When purchasing a replacement remote, matching the button color ensures protocol compatibility without needing to know the frequency.
