Vision Lite

Definition

A vision lite is a framed window insert installed in a commercial or service garage door section. It provides natural daylight and a sightline through the closed door without requiring a full window section, and is typically available in glass or polycarbonate in several standard sizes.

A vision lite is a factory-installed or field-added window insert mounted within the steel face of a commercial garage door section. The insert consists of a frame—usually steel or aluminum—that holds a pane of tempered glass or polycarbonate, sealed to the door section to prevent weather infiltration. The opening cut into the door section is reinforced so the structural integrity of the section is maintained.

Vision lites serve two practical purposes in commercial settings. First, they allow personnel to see into the bay through a closed door before opening it—a significant safety benefit on busy docks or manufacturing floors where a powered door opening could endanger workers on the other side. Second, they introduce natural daylight into the bay, reducing the need for artificial lighting during daytime hours and improving working conditions.

Standard vision lite sizes for commercial sectional doors typically range from 8 inches by 8 inches to 12 inches by 18 inches or larger, and are positioned at eye level on the section. Multiple vision lites can be installed in a single section or across multiple sections to increase visibility and light admission. On rolling steel doors, a full section of vision lites or an equivalent curtain-slat-with-lite design is used instead.

For doors in fire-rated applications, vision lites must use fire-rated glazing and be tested as part of the door assembly's fire rating. Standard annealed or tempered glass without the appropriate fire rating cannot be used in a fire door section.
